On promises and vows

"When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay."
(Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 ESV)
I've heard the teaching from many Christians on many occasions that one must never promise anything. Otherwise, he's going to fall under God's wrath if he's not going to fulfill the promise he made. Why would anyone want to expose himself to such a danger? But, here's my answer to these people. One can greatly benefit from making and fulfilling promises. They build our reputation and confidence. We become the ones who can be trusted. Without promises progress cannot be sustained; banks will go bankrupt and civilizations will fall. We must take responsibility and be reliable. Only promises can teach us how to do that.
